One of the more common complaints about the Catholic Church is its supposed out-of-touchedness. Our morality is too old-fashioned, too outdated, and becoming increasingly irrelevant to moderns, even to some varieties of Catholics themselves. If only the Church would realize the great benefits of modern technology, like the internet!

Well, turns out even the Pope is a fan of the intarwebs, calling the internet “a gift from God.” After tweeting (man, even I don’t have a twitter account. Pope Francis is more hip than me…) his support for the March(ers) for Life, the Pope said
A culture of encounter, listening and dialogue will help everyone see and “appreciate more fully the important values inspired by Christianity, such as the vision of the human person, the nature of marriage and the family, the proper distinction between the religious and the political spheres, the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity and many others,” he said.
Though there are drawbacks and risks with an accelerated and sometimes isolating means of communication, “they do not justify rejecting social media,” he said.
Technology should serve humanity, helping it “grow in humanity and mutual understanding.”
The pope called for an attitude of “neighborliness” in communication, to promote closeness and community.
Hopefully, our T&C readers find in these digital pages a more full appreciation of the values inspired by Christianity. The message is timeless though the medium may change. As Pope Francis demonstrates, evidenced by the continual surprise and admiration by the media at many of his unscripted moments of charity, the Gospel message is the same but always fresh and inspiring.
I’ll admit that some days lead me to consider unplugging, or at least unfriending particular folks who make it a point to bash Christian morality or the Church. The Pope is reminding me, and us, that we shouldn’t hide our pixels under a bushel basket. Your facebook comment may be the only Bible that a person reads. Keep it friendly and faithful!
